Cliff Edogun, Ph.D., is an adjunct professor of government at the Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland, Ohio, and has completed his first book The Nigerian Complex. His story is a gripping and potent tale of two friends of contrasting social and spiritual backgrounds facing the harsh realities of life in a country where the day-to-day struggles include finding access to water and electricity and overcoming bleak economic prospects.

Edogun is Nigerian-born. After earning a Ph.D. in political science from Rutgers University, he returned to lecture at Ahmadu Bello University and the University of Port Harcourt in Nigeria. He returned to Port Harcourt in 1984 and published a few seminal papers on the Nigerian petroleum industry before relocating to America in 1992.

Published by New York City-based Page Publishing, Edoguns poignant tale is about a country rich in oil reserves but bereft of employment opportunities for university graduates. Intensifying the challenge of the oppressive poverty is a government so corrupt that it appears to deliberately prevent its citizens from being heard.

After two years of being jobless, Asuquo Udoh applies for a doorman’s job at the International Airport Hotel. He is willing to accept the only form of employment available to him despite his degree in chemistry. His good friend Demola Martins, an electrical engineer from a family of professional elite, opts to wait for a job more suited to his social rank. Four years later, Demola decides to act on a vision and founds the Campaign Against Rigging Elections (CARE). Asuquo and Demola, along with three other visionaries, form the Crisis Group to head the Campaign, and a youth movement is born. Through peaceful rallying, they push for a more transparent balloting and counting systemthe spot ballot methodwith the ultimate goal of eliminating election rigging to redeem the Nigeria that prospers all.
